Summary

The Accountant supports accurate and timely financial reporting for Convoy's Canadian and U.S. operations. Reporting to the Senior Accountant, the role maintains assigned general ledger accounts, completes reconciliations and analysis, supports period-end close and financial statement preparation, and assists with sales tax compliance, payroll accounting, and year-end audit requirements. The Accountant also contributes to stronger controls, efficient processes, and effective use of the ERP system.

Responsibilities

1. Financial Accounting and Reporting

  • Maintain assigned general ledger accounts and prepare accurate, well-supported journal entries, including accruals, prepaids, fixed assets, intercompany transactions, and payroll-related entries.
  • Prepare daily cash position and cash flow analysis; complete bank reconciliations and resolve outstanding items promptly.
  • Support monthly, quarterly, and year-end close activities and assist with financial statement preparation in accordance with applicable accounting standards and internal timelines.
  • Complete monthly balance sheet reconciliations, investigate discrepancies, and process required corrections.
  • Support payroll accounting by reconciling payroll liabilities, clearing accounts, and related general ledger balances and coordinating the resolution of discrepancies with Payroll.

 

2. Tax Compliance Audit and Controls

  • Prepare and file Canadian and U.S. sales tax returns and remittances, maintaining complete support and meeting all filing deadlines.
  • Maintain organized tax records and compliance calendars for assigned Canadian and U.S. jurisdictions.
  • Research and respond to sales tax notices and questions, escalating complex matters as appropriate.
  • Assist with year-end audit preparation by completing working papers, schedules, and supporting documentation and responding to auditor requests.
  • Follow accounting policies and internal controls and identify opportunities to strengthen financial accuracy, compliance, and documentation.

 

3. Systems Process Improvement and Business Support

  • Support ERP system optimization, including process review, testing, issue resolution, and documentation of changes.
  • Identify and implement practical improvements that reduce manual work, improve data quality, and increase the efficiency of recurring accounting processes.
  • Collaborate with Finance, Payroll, operations, and other departments to resolve accounting issues and provide timely, service-oriented support.
  • Complete ad hoc analysis, projects, and other duties as assigned by the Senior Accountant or Corporate Controller.

 

Requirements

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree or diploma in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field; a CPA designation or active progress toward one is an asset.
  • Minimum three years of relevant corporate accounting experience, ideally within a large or multi-location organization.
  • Experience supporting both Canadian and U.S. entities is preferred.
  • Experience in nationwide distribution, construction materials, or a related industry is a strong asset.

 

Technical Skills

  • Strong knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles; experience with ASPE is preferred, and familiarity with U.S. GAAP is an asset.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including lookup functions, PivotTables, and macros.
  • Experience with ERP systems and a demonstrated interest in process optimization and automation.
  • Solid understanding of financial statement preparation, account reconciliation, sales tax compliance, internal controls, and audit processes.
